Concrete Work in Studio City: Local Permits & Guide

By Yalee, LA Concrete Quotes · Last reviewed · How we write our guides

Studio City is a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles. City Planning groups it with Sherman Oaks, Toluca Lake and Cahuenga Pass in one community plan (City Planning). City of LA permit rules apply. What you need to check before you hire is your own lot: some streets are flat Valley floor, and others climb toward Mulholland Drive and the Cahuenga Pass.

Confirm your lot before you collect quotes

Look up your address in ZIMAS, the City’s free map (ZIMAS). For a concrete driveway or patio, these lines matter most:

If a quote only says “remove and pour” and your lot is hillside or inside the Mulholland plan, ask for permits, grading, any wall and drainage to be listed in writing.

Where Studio City permits are handled

You usually do not need downtown. Valley offices for Studio City are in Van Nuys:

Put in every written quote who is responsible for each permit. Office hours change—check the office page before you go.

On a typical flat lot, the slab on your property is private; the apron and public sidewalk need the BOE A-Permit. In single-family and duplex zones the apron is limited to 10–18 feet wide unless the City approves a wider one (LAMC 62.105.2). More detail on the City process is in our Sherman Oaks guide and driveway replacement guide—the offices and code are the same City of LA rules.

Busy streets and truck access

Parts of Studio City sit on or near commercial corridors such as Ventura Boulevard. A concrete truck, pump or dumpster may need to stand in the street. Ask each contractor where equipment will stage, who handles any street-use permission, and whether overnight storage is allowed. That logistics detail can change both price and schedule. This is a question for your block—not a rule that every Studio City street is the same.

Trees next to the driveway or sidewalk

If a parkway tree’s roots have lifted the sidewalk or apron, get the BOE A-Permit for the concrete first, then a StreetsLA permit before any root is cut. StreetsLA inspects and can require a redesign that saves the roots, or deny cutting (BOE; StreetsLA).

Separately, the City protects certain native trees and shrubs (including most native oaks) once they reach a listed size. Digging next to one can require a protected-tree permit. Tell contractors about nearby trees before you lock in a design (protected tree guide; StreetsLA). For sidewalk repair options and the City rebate program, see concrete and sidewalk repair.

Nearby cities and edge addresses

Studio City is in the City of Los Angeles. Burbank next door is a separate city with its own building and public-works process (Burbank Public Works). Addresses near edges—including near the Universal City area—can fall under a different city or county than you expect. Confirm the jurisdiction on your tax bill or in ZIMAS before you hire, and make sure the quote uses that office’s rules.

Studio City FAQ

Is Studio City its own city?

No. It is a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles (City Planning). City of LA offices handle most permits here. Burbank is separate.

How is this different from the Sherman Oaks guide?

Both use the same City of LA Valley offices and much of the same code. This page focuses on checks that often come up for Studio City homeowners: Mulholland and Cahuenga Pass hillside lots, staging on busy commercial streets, and nearby non–City of LA edges. Always verify your own parcel in ZIMAS.

Do I need a permit to replace my driveway?

Work on the apron, curb or public sidewalk generally needs a BOE A-Permit (BOE). Whether the slab on your lot needs a permit depends on the job (for example grading or a retaining wall). Ask LADBS, and make sure the quote says who gets each permit.

Is my driveway in a historic district?

Studio City is not described here as an HPOZ. City Planning lists local historic districts separately (HPOZ list). Mulholland design review is a different program. If ZIMAS shows a special designation on your parcel, ask Planning before you change a visible front finish.
